New games this week: Madden '08 edition

First off: Best new release week image ever. Second: It's Madden week! And this one's apparently pretty good. But what if you don't crave the feel of the pigskin in your grip? Well, there are a few oddball releases in the portable arena, but is it worth the risk? For the next couple of weeks, the game store is going to be hostile ground, with a jock-to-geek ratio that's going to be downright dangerous. Go get your DS RPG, just be careful to avoid a wedgie.

now this is a good week. Heroes of Mana, Luminous Arc, and Rune Factory all look great, and Metroid will be mine the moment I get home.
FrankTheCrank @ Aug 13th 2007 12:57PM
My Mario avatar kicks ass.
joevill @ Aug 13th 2007 9:10AM
Nothing interesting this week
Poisoned Al @ Aug 13th 2007 9:10AM
I would say "who cares?" but sadly many people do.
HotShotX @ Aug 13th 2007 9:12AM
Fuck Madden.
Fuck EA for being a company of shit creativity.
...and Fuck all the idiotic fans who swallow this shit every year.
Maybe next year's feature will be random riots post-game, and you must get your team to safety for fucking up the game-winning field goal.

baby sea tuna @ Aug 13th 2007 9:16AM
Whoa, I would totally buy that game.
You should apply for a job at EA today, sir!
Christopher Grant @ Aug 13th 2007 10:03AM
Do I have to remind you that EA showed off some of the best-looking games at E3 this year? Rock Band, Army of Two, The Simpsons, skate, Sim City Societies, Mercenaries 2, Orange Box, Crysis, Hellgate London.
Sure, they're not developing these all in house, but this new EA certainly feels a far cry (HAR!) from the EA of old.
Rare Hare @ Aug 13th 2007 1:36PM
Fuck you, HotShotX. Do I go around saying "fuck Oblivion" just because I don't care for it? No. I don't.
I'll never understand why in the world anyone would get angry about another's gaming preferences.
We like Madden, OK? WTF?
Jojo @ Aug 13th 2007 2:06PM
I'm going to buy two copies just to piss you off :)
Jake @ Oct 5th 2007 9:29AM
Somebody wore their crabby pants today. Seriously, why should you care about other people's gaming tastes? It doesn't affect you.
Sitting on a couch playing a friend in a game of Madden is far from the worst gaming experience out there.
Alex @ Aug 13th 2007 9:15AM
people continue to support this game EVERY single year.
and i ask why? other than an updated roster, can you say it was worth spending 60$/50$ again for those little tidbits of features?
i personally dun care for it.
EA is getting lazy.
Crono @ Aug 13th 2007 10:30AM
I like football, but I haven't owned a madded game since madded 2002 for Gamecube. However, everything I hear about this game for Wii is good, and the visuals look pretty good too. I"m tempted to pick this up for some good old fashioned family fun on sundays.
Konny @ Aug 13th 2007 9:15AM
They're still releasing XBOX games?
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 13th 2007 9:15AM
hey, i couldnt care less about real football, let alone a video game version of football, but why the hate for people that enjoy madden? they should be allowed to have their fun.
baby sea tuna @ Aug 13th 2007 9:47AM
I think the ire is more directed at the fact that the Madden fans have no problem spending the full price every year for updated rosters and one or two token "new" features.
Then again, when you only buy one game a year...
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 13th 2007 9:56AM
but what difference does it make to anyone what other people spend the money they earned on?
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 13th 2007 10:37AM
Hardcore enthusiasts cry for more innovation and shinier graphics while lambasting sequels, ports, remakes, and shovelware. They see Madden as the epitome of a sequel, port, remake, shovelware, with no innovation, no dramatic shiny increase, uncompelling gameplay, tired, "broken", cash-in, milked franchise that is still one of the top ranked selling games year in year out. The enthusiasts see this as all their worst concepts of games in one place and constantly beating "worthy" titles.
Rare Hare @ Aug 13th 2007 1:29PM
Thank you, Jody. It's our god damn business how we spend our money. I really enjoy Madden, and yes I think the updates it offers are worth the money.
Would I like it to be released cheaper? Yeah, it would be nice. But I can always just wait a couple months. These games go down in price really fast.
Matt B @ Aug 13th 2007 9:21AM
This will be the 1st year I won't buy Madden on launch day. There is no innovation. It is the same engine as 06 with some new animations. I'll start buying it again when the next engine is done which is 09 or 2010.
GamerG @ Aug 13th 2007 9:29AM
If the PS3 Madden was as good as the 360 version then somehow I doubt there would be so much Madden hate!
ForceUnleashed @ Aug 13th 2007 9:33AM
Hush....you'll just upset the sony trolls and fanboys.
Even though its true.
copa @ Aug 13th 2007 10:00AM
1UP says it best:
"Sadly, just like with NCAA Football 08 and All-Pro Football 2K8, PS3 owners are stuck with an inferior version of Madden. While the game runs at 60 frames per second on Microsoft's box, Madden only clocks in at 30fps on Sony's console. The result? The gameplay isn't nearly as smooth as the 360 version and even stutters at times (see the difference in this comparison video). And that's the reason why we're scoring the PS3 edition slightly lower."
CJ @ Aug 13th 2007 9:31AM
Good job shoving EA's crap down our throats Joystiq! Do they really need to make a new football game every year or so and put it on every platform imaginable? Does football change $50-$60 worth every year? EA takes greed to a whole new level.
Besides, you guys don't have Persona 3 on the PS2. PERSONA 3! That and a few DS games are all that are worth buying anyway.
Add Persona 3 please!
ForceUnleashed @ Aug 13th 2007 9:32AM
Why are you mad at Joystiq? They're not "forcing" anything down your throat. You CHOSE to come to this website idiot. And its their job to report which games are coming out when.
GOd your stupidity is beyond me.
Martin @ Aug 13th 2007 9:38AM
Yeah you fucking tool. Take it easy on the 'Stiq.
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 13th 2007 9:40AM
CJ = dumb
RBecho @ Aug 13th 2007 9:42AM
Umm, the reason they have to release it on every platform is a concession of the contract for exclusivity they have with the NFL. If they don't release it on every platform (and I believe the quality has to be acceptable on all, so no crap ports) then they lose exclusivity, and I think have to pay the NFL a ton of cash.
Rare Hare @ Aug 13th 2007 2:48PM
"CJ = dumb"
As in "CAPTAIN JODY"? HA. HAHA. BUUURN.
I'm lame.
ForceUnleashed @ Aug 13th 2007 9:30AM
I just got my copy!
jimy @ Aug 13th 2007 9:33AM
ugh lucky
samfish @ Aug 13th 2007 9:51AM
Of Tennis Titans?
You lucky sonuvabitch!
Huh...did you know that "sonuvabitch" is in FireFox's dictionary?
ForceUnleashed @ Aug 13th 2007 9:56AM
I'm pretty sure thats sarcasism samfish but just in case it isn't
I just got my copy of Madden 08 for the 360. So far I'm loving it.
comtar @ Aug 13th 2007 9:37AM
I think Madden 2008 comes out this week, I don't know how I know this, but I just do. Meh it's just some small EA title that has never gone anywhere. Kinda like Daikatana. I don't know anyone who owns any of the Madden games, well except that guy at work...
herman @ Aug 13th 2007 9:54AM
Funny how the same people that are hating on Madden, or any other sports game for that matter, are waiting to buy Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3. This will be the 3rd Call of Duty in 3 years. Just like Madden. And how many Ghost Recons have there been already? Shooter fans are no different than sports fans. If you disagree, then peep the MS holiday lineup. Madden 08, GTA4(late), Halo 3, COD4, NBA2K8, NBALive08, and Bioshock and Mass Effect. Only 2 games mentioned are not a sequel or in the series. Not saying Madden is always good, but don't hate on those of us who like sports games.
ForceUnleashed @ Aug 13th 2007 9:58AM
Exactly!
And don't even get me started on Final Fantasy...or RPG's in general. The same stuff. Yet you don't hear me complaining about it. Nor do you hear these haters bitching at Square Enix that they're not going to buy their games.
jynxycat @ Aug 13th 2007 9:53AM
[insert angsty high school teen disapproval of sports titles and the socially acceptable view that EA = the devil here]
lul.
ps. Go Vikings.
Jacob P. @ Aug 13th 2007 10:04AM
boo Vikings....yay Cowboys!
I actually do want the Vikes to do pretty good, cause I wanna see Adrian succeed...I'm from Oklahoma, and he's the best thing to come out of here in a while...
samfish @ Aug 13th 2007 10:38AM
Go Browns!
...no, I'm just kidding. The Browns are the eternally sucky team, but I'm from Cleveland so I'm obligated so pretend it's not the case.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 13th 2007 11:50AM
Go Browns! I too am from the Cleveland area. Cavs and Lebron got robbed!
John @ Aug 13th 2007 12:32PM
F Da Brons, Go Stillers
Rare Hare @ Aug 13th 2007 2:50PM
Chiefs, baby.
And the Patriots. The Patriots are my reserve team.
Patrick @ Aug 13th 2007 9:53AM
Hey joystiq, you havin some sort of flashback to yourr days at John Hughes High School?
Zach @ Aug 13th 2007 10:07AM
My high school football coach told me I was bad at football and all of my friends were good at it.
I felt left out and EA is obviously rubbing my horrid hand-eye coordination in my face.
Those Pricks.
RoboChamp @ Aug 13th 2007 10:07AM
Everybody's missing the point: There's a ****ing Xbox game on that list!
Zombie # 23,433 @ Aug 13th 2007 10:51AM
They dont have it listed but there its also coming out for Gamecube.
Alex @ Aug 13th 2007 10:13AM
Not that you don't have plenty of reason to hate, but between all of this "we're committed to moving the medium forward" talk from the new EA boss lately, Activison now being the largest third party publisher in the states, and pretty consistent reports that Madden NFL 08 is the best football game since ESPN NFL 2K5 (lol)...
WiNG @ Aug 13th 2007 10:15AM
hey, the wii version has the "play with one hand while you scarf down doritos with the other" mode, right??
Warcraftonian @ Aug 13th 2007 10:20AM
There's a piece on how sports games can enable people who hate sports to have a normal conversation with people down the pub here:
www.makeyougoblind.com
It's pretty funny.
AJ @ Aug 13th 2007 10:16AM
Let's go Patriots... Friggin' people, if you don't
like Madden don't buy it if you hate EA don't buy their
products...
For the rest of you Wii owners out there, see you soon.
Let's go Patriots...
Jake @ Aug 13th 2007 10:52AM
AJ, that's the problem. I love football so I therefore love football games. But I hate EA for spending millions to reduce my football franchise choices to one. We are playing a weaker Madden game than we could because EA is spending dev money on exclusivity instead of on improving the product to compete.
No competition = weaker experience.
It is like when you hate your crack dealer, but don't have anywhere else to go to for a fix. ;)
