Wii gets new system update fixes Opera problem
We knew we shouldn't have expected much from a new Wii system update, what with the last update and the Metroid media dump so close in our rear view mirror, so imagine our surprise and joy to find out that the new update adds a slot for Nintendo 64 cartridges as well as fixes a problem that some have been having with the Opera browser freezing and adds some stability for those using the Wii's LAN adapter.
...We regret to inform you that the Joystiq labs have just discovered that the new update does not, as one of us insisted, add a cartridge slot to the Wii. In other news, our Wii is broken ... as is our copy of Quest 64. We're sorry for the inconvenience, and hope one of us will take this a lesson to lay off the hooch.

I consider myself one of the few who absolutely loved Quest 64.
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 14th 2007 10:14AM
same here
Zertoss @ Aug 14th 2007 10:58AM
Ditto.
Jerk Face @ Aug 14th 2007 11:21AM
Quest 64 is the Worst RPG Ever Made Ever.
George @ Aug 14th 2007 1:07PM
Quest64 is the worst GAME ever made. PERIOD! Absolutely. Horrible. Just let me find the guys who made it...
Lanturn of Ash @ Aug 14th 2007 10:26AM
Nintendo? Actually fixing problems with their system?! O_O
vidGuy @ Aug 14th 2007 10:31AM
What they should have done is created a way for N64 games to mimic the old controller expansions - saved data (Ghosts for Mario Kart) and rumble if you use the GC controller.
BPM @ Aug 14th 2007 1:54PM
No reason they couldn't. Project64 does everything a real N64 could do (minus some compatability issues with SOME games), and then some (online play via Kaillera client).
As for why Nintendo hasn't emulated Rumble Pak or Controller Pak yet... It is a mystery.
The True Gamer @ Aug 14th 2007 10:35AM
Seems the only times the dusty ol' Wii gets turned on in this house is for system updates lately.
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 14th 2007 10:39AM
you should try playing some games. i reccomend excite truck.
Joshua @ Aug 14th 2007 10:40AM
Heck I don't even turn mine on for that...
vidGuy @ Aug 14th 2007 11:28AM
I can't seem to find a time to turn the Wii off. Of course, the only times I've turned the 360 on in the last few months is for demos of games (Halo 3 beta, Stranglehold, Bioshock), so I guess a gamer could have that problem with any console...
Kye @ Aug 14th 2007 11:50AM
Excite truck is indeed good. I only have the Diamond track in Super excite left to get an S level on.
Red steel and Zelda are also worth buying IMHO.
That Mario football game is over-hyped though, don't buy it. You'll only get humped online.
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 14th 2007 11:55AM
don't forget about Mirror Mode, Kye.
Joshua @ Aug 14th 2007 12:04PM
Buy Red Steel...really?
Different strokes I guess but I thought that game was terrible. The contols just feel clunky.
samfish @ Aug 14th 2007 12:30PM
Lately, I haven't had time to turn ANY console on in like the last week and a half.
But I recommend Sonic for the Wii. Stick with it until you can ungimp the controls and it becomes a blast.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 14th 2007 10:44AM
I don't get the picture. It's like he's some sort of Specter from an Theater House. Oh I get it. It's Duke Nukem Forever's console!
Doug Kaplan @ Aug 14th 2007 10:53AM
It's the Phantom from the Phantom of the Opera, you know Opera, the company that made the Wii browser.
Ghen @ Aug 14th 2007 10:56AM
/golfclap doug sorry bud but you don't win.
Kevlar @ Aug 14th 2007 11:01AM
Possible sarcasm aside, it's the phantom of the Opera.

Hey, you could joke about it or tell us what the update specifically fixes.

*points*
ITS LEONIDAS!
Adv2k1 @ Aug 14th 2007 11:30AM
who uses the LAN adapter? are any games using the LAN adapter because its news to me.
Evil Bastard @ Aug 14th 2007 11:43AM
Super Mario Strikers uses the interweb connections.
Farseer @ Aug 14th 2007 11:51AM
Wireless blows. As a medium for data exchange, it is only for those desperate to connect and unwilling to run a wire.
Before you hate, I know that there are some who are willing but unable to run a wire. You'd be surprised. With enough motivation and the right tools, you can run a wire just about anywhere.
Dropped wireless connections FTL.
(BTW, your Nintendo online jab did not go unnoticed - just ignored.)
Lifted 0ne 4l9 @ Aug 14th 2007 1:34PM
Wireless is no good as Farseer said i too use the LAN adapter i only use wireless when i decide to move it into my bedroom on occasion, so when possable Etherent is the way to go, yes there are occasions were wireless is a must, my last apartment i was resorted to getting the wireless adapter for my 360 becouse i didnt want to run an ugly cable across my apartment that may also yanked by someones feet and mess up my 360 and it wasnt worth finding a way to run that long of a length or ethernet cable, but yea wireless sucks.
Ryan LN @ Aug 14th 2007 2:31PM
Hey Lifted, ever heard of a period? In addition to being something that the fairer sex suffer through every lunar cycle, they're also this really helpful grammatical tool that lets your reader know when you've finished a particular thought. You should think about using 'em; all the cool kids are doing it.
Mr Khan @ Aug 15th 2007 6:30PM
I don't know about y'all, but my WiFi works just as good as my Ethernet connected internet, i haven't noticed a discrepancy between the two, speed wise, but that's probably because my WiFi taps out at a speed WELL higher than my 3 mpbs DSL connection,
I couldn't live without my wireless router
WiNG @ Aug 14th 2007 12:53PM
I just wanna say 2 things about Mario Strikers Charged:
1. IT IS AWESOME. ITS LIKE PLAYING NBA JAM BUT CRAZIER
2. Online is fun except MOST PEOPLE ARE STAT WHORES who will disconnect the second they think they will lose. For instance, my record is 6-12, even though I played about 40 games, but guess what, all the games not on record were when my opp disconnected right after I scored a goal. LAME. They need to count disconnects as losses, or show a disconnect record and you can choose not to play someone based on that record.
Crono @ Aug 14th 2007 1:34PM
Disconnects are indeed lame. I think battle.net started showing disconnects as a stat, or just counted them as a loss.
The problem with counting them as a loss is sometimes disconnects do happen, so you'd be boning that 1% of innocent disconnecters.
Randy @ Aug 14th 2007 1:41PM
I agree. even if someone disconnects accidentally, if it happens often, you still don't want to connect with them because it'll interrupt your game, even if it is an accident.
Mr Khan @ Aug 15th 2007 6:34PM
You may get no points (or wins or losses) when someone disconnects from you, they lose points, which makes sense.
But i love Strikers Charged Online, as well, but i've never had any deliberate disconnections, but i did have one guy who literally gave up and stopped playing (i was winning with a good margin), which i then took full advantage of to score a 6-goal megastrike :)
RUSKULL @ Aug 14th 2007 1:35PM
No flash 8 for the browser? Still broken then ;)
Randy @ Aug 14th 2007 1:42PM
Or keyboard support.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 14th 2007 2:02PM
Adobe's fault those cheap bastards. Opera has to issue a new update to the web browser to fully give keyboard support. I wonder if anyone still has the trial version.
BPM @ Aug 14th 2007 2:18PM
Or Flash 9. But that isn't Opera nor Nintendo's fault. Adobe has yet to release an SDK to developers for versions of Flash newer than 7.
ridv34 @ Aug 14th 2007 2:48PM
Hooch? It just seems like you could of said beer
Paul @ Aug 14th 2007 6:43PM
ya, still no flash 8 = half useless browser.
jimd @ Aug 14th 2007 10:03PM
I'm surprised that nobody picked up on the fact that Opera removed ALL mention of the Opera Wii remote API from their developer website on the same day that this system update became available.
I don't think that it contains "fixes" at all. I think this update removes the remote API. Perhaps Nintendo sees it as a potential threat to their "classic games" sales or something.
billmuel @ Aug 14th 2007 11:45PM
No one is mentioning that this small "update" removed the small amount of keyboard support that was there.
Guybrush Threepwood @ Aug 15th 2007 9:08PM
If they were going to do this, why not just update the Flash Player?
billmuel @ Aug 16th 2007 6:31PM
just kidding about the keyboard thing
i had to hard reset the console to get it to read the keyboard again
but still. now that i know its so close i cant stand not having the keyboard on opera
Mysterio @ Aug 18th 2007 12:01PM
Maybe Nintendo is planning on releasing their own keyboard that is wireless?
One can only hope!
