Today's most first-person-waggle video: Metroid Prime 3

Metroid. Prime. 3. So close to release. After delays and forgotten promises of online play, will this be the first great Wii first-person shooter? This new GameTrailers clip gives no idea to how this thirst quenching title will control. We're trying to to get sucked into the hype. (There's that other game to strum us into a frenzy for now.) But here's hoping that Metroid will be a much-needed oasis. (The thing in the desert, not the band.)
See the new video for this August 27 game after the break.

I'm looking forward to getting my copy of Bioshock in the mail for $30, but Metroid Prime 3 is still my wonderwall for August. Sorry, Big Daddy, Samus comes first.
Anni @ Aug 17th 2007 12:21AM
The compliments in this article are decidedly backhanded. I personally am already way caught up in the Prime hype.
Greg @ Aug 17th 2007 8:30AM
Was not Resident Evil 4 the Wii's first great first person shooter?
megaStryke @ Aug 17th 2007 9:17AM
It was third-person and lacked many elements that made a shooter a shooter, namely strafing or even being able to MOVE while shooting. It is as much of a shooter as the original Resident Evil games, only with many more enemies to fend off at once.
phattie @ Aug 17th 2007 12:25AM
1: lock on (a form of aim assist for noobs)
2: spam, spam, spam with blaster
3: repeat
vidGuy @ Aug 17th 2007 12:26AM
Have you ever played a Metroid game?
phattie @ Aug 17th 2007 12:32AM
Yes, all of them (consoles and handhelds), but, stopped at MP1... MP3 is more Halo than Metroid.
REUYL @ Aug 17th 2007 12:46AM
"MP3 is more Halo than Metroid."
Metroid is more Halo than Metroid?
Have you gone into the future, played the game, and come back to tell us?
Admiral_Mike @ Aug 17th 2007 4:31AM
The lock on in corruption only fixes the view on one object for strafing around them and homing missles etc, you still have to aim at what ever it is your trying to shoot.
Cuja @ Aug 17th 2007 12:39AM
Oookay I guess. I'm sorry but this looks outdated.
REUYL @ Aug 17th 2007 12:43AM
I hate to bring up the same old argument, but this game is being anticipated for its control scheme, not its graphics. This could be the first _good_ FPS to make use of the Wiimote.
Bigfoot @ Aug 17th 2007 1:12AM
You mean the Wii's graphics aren't as good as the 360 or PS3?!!? No way!
Jake @ Aug 17th 2007 8:43AM
It is kinda pointless to bring up Wii graphics at this stage in the game. Metroid's graphics look good for a Wii game. The controls may add more than great visuals would have. Also, don't forget the fact that less resources had to be dumped into getting the visuals right and could therefore be spent elsewhere.
Psaakyrn @ Aug 17th 2007 12:47AM
Frankly though, the video just looks... uninspiring. They should take a page from HL2 or something.
I mean, you basically have an average bombardment and invasion scenario.
vidGuy @ Aug 17th 2007 12:55AM
I agree with you. It's a good thing the game has much more going for it than this video shows. Hint: check out any of the other videos available or the previews of the game floating around.
fawazr @ Aug 17th 2007 1:00AM
As expected, MP3 is the most compelling argument for the Wii for the next 4 months. The graphics bump is so small as to be unnoticeable, but I didn't really expect a $249 tiny box to be a graphics cruncher. Ultimately, I'm impressed and this should be a fitting finale to the MP series.
SoulBlade @ Aug 17th 2007 10:37AM
most compelling for the next 4 months? you know mario galaxy and smash come out within that time period too right?
ZekeThePlumber @ Aug 17th 2007 1:02AM
Cripes, the people who are making these demos need to learn how to use the charge beam. I feel like I'm watching a third person headache inducing version of Megaman.
Hello @ Aug 17th 2007 1:04AM
This video... makes it look like a boring waggle lock on version of Halo.
zelder_man @ Aug 17th 2007 1:19AM
Yeah, I've seen this. Turn on your Wii, go to the Metroid preview channel and watch it there. You got me all giddy for nothing. Now i gotta wait til 8-20 to get my next MP3 fix. Plus I've been playing Metroid on NES for the first time. By all that is holy that game is the toughest shit ever. I can usually pick up an old title like that and be decent at it. That game doesn't even give you a chance. Oh well, I've got a while to trudge through it.
Lex @ Aug 17th 2007 1:27AM
The graphics in that game ugh. For get the "next gen" bullshit.
Damn just do better graphically than the first xbox. If the game doesn't look better than Phantom Dust it's not worth spending alot of time talking about.
And that game play. Easy mode shooter if the Nunchuck had more buttons on it you probably wouldn't even need the Wii-mote.
captainawesome @ Aug 17th 2007 1:37AM
Yeah, I mean Ocarina of Time? Come on, WAY worse graphics than the original Xbox. CLEARLY not worth spending time talking about, regardless of how many people and publications continually regard it as the best game ever. If the graphics are worse than the Xbox, it's a bad game. Period.
Nick Simpson @ Aug 17th 2007 1:55AM
@captainawesome: your comparing a N64 game to xbox games, why? If ocarina of time came out now or even back when xbox was big it WOULD have been dogged for its crap graphics. However back when it came out the graphics were fine.
Anni @ Aug 17th 2007 2:09AM
Phantom Dust: Relevant Since... two-thousand, um.. uuuh...
captainawesome @ Aug 17th 2007 3:04AM

What's with this ridiculous assumption that pretty means good game? Just look at Micheal Bay movies. Awesome SFX, shitty movies. Except Transformers. I don't even care that they messed up some story, it was awesome.
Shiro @ Aug 17th 2007 1:29AM
The appeal to Metroid isn't the shooting, it's the adventure.
Only a halo junkie/MS fanboy could totally miss that fact. Well, or a retard, but some Halo fans get to college.
TheSecretWeapon @ Aug 17th 2007 8:06PM
But the issue is Retro Studios have killed most of the adventure element now. It's a level based game where you complete each level and move on. It's all got "much more shooting" than the first 2 games according to Retro.
Schoon @ Aug 17th 2007 9:04AM
Yes...I've seen these Halo guys in college.
...Maybe it was at a frat party...
...or "Baby Bio 101 for Nubcakes"...
Jonny @ Aug 17th 2007 9:06AM
"but some Halo fans get to college."
They're called "frat boys".
Vidikron @ Aug 17th 2007 10:39AM
@Jonny
It's amusing how you can whine about Nintendo games and fans being called "kiddie" in one thread (last R&C news item) and turn around and call Halo fans "frat boys" in this one.
Pot, meet kettle.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Aug 18th 2007 11:32AM
> The appeal to Metroid isn't the shooting, it's the adventure.
Oh! Cut the crap!!!
How do you open doors?
What do you do with monsters?? Analyze them? Or shoot them????
Do you do boss fights with ... jumps??? No. You - again - shoot and shoot at them. There is no secret switch to avoid battles.
Metroid was, is and will be a shooting game. Because from all I read, all adventure stuff was pretty disconnected from game play, affecting only few elements like ending you see in the end.
In the adventure sence, what you all fanboys are describing, is first Fallout game. It is RPG, but has important aspect to it: you can go thru game with no battles at all. That's I understand - "adventure".
Metroid was, is and will be about shooting. Regardless of what its flameboys are saying.
Exo @ Aug 17th 2007 1:31AM
They never promised online multi, so i dont see why people are still suprised/disapointed.
MB @ Aug 17th 2007 1:38AM
"forgotten promises of online play"
Actually they promised it WOULDN'T have online play from the beginning.
Gambit @ Aug 17th 2007 2:03AM
Indeed they did.
CountChocula @ Aug 17th 2007 1:41AM
MAN you people are spoiled if you say that these graphics are bad. I grew up on the NES. The most technically advanced thing in my house is my PS2. I've played Gears of War and the Heavenly Sword demo at my friend's house, but I can still go back to my SNES and have a friggin blast. If you guys seriously look at that game, and tell me that it's not worth playing because of how it looks, you should be locked away with only an Intellivision until you're weaned of the teat of HD.
Nick Simpson @ Aug 17th 2007 2:00AM
Its not unreasonable for many people to be used to 360-good graphics by now. To see a game with graphics that could be achieved on a console 5 years ago, its a bit disappointing. That can't make it not worth playing, but it could tip the scale. I played through several hours of Earthbound on SNES recently, but if MP3 doesn't have good gameplay then the graphics are just one more problem.
And heres my opinion, though its really a preference and not a deciding factor: Wii graphics are great for Mario, but personally I think a game like Metroid would really benefit from some current-gen graphics.
Kye @ Aug 17th 2007 6:43AM
I agree
The most played game on my Wii right now:
Blazing lazers for the TG16.
Gameplay over graphics everytime.
megaStryke @ Aug 17th 2007 8:56AM
Hey Nick.
Heard of the PS2? It's still outselling the 360 and PS3. Someone ought to tell it that its outdated graphics are dragging it down.
parker @ Aug 17th 2007 1:55AM
I really hate the arguments that go on here. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Some people look for graphics for a good fps, others great controls. We all know Nintendo isn't strong on the visual front, so pointing it out doesn't do crap for your argument but make you sound like a 12 year old. I respect Nintendo for wanting to create a console that is appealing to hardcore and the casual with a good price tag. I personally enjoy a game that looks as great as it plays, once again just me!
I also agree that at the root of a game, the game play is what matters. Just because a broad is beautiful doesn't mean she is good in bed. A really pretty game can suck ass, that I know.
So, why don't we all just respect Nintendo for trying to be different. So what if they sacrificed graphics for price, some people don't mind and others welcome it with open arms.
I hate those who are ignorant and close minded to new game play.
Nick Simpson @ Aug 17th 2007 2:00AM
I'm sorry man its really just a matter of preference. If it bothers people that Nintendo chose price over graphics, so severely that the graphics are hardly better than their last console, your just gonna have to get used to it. Personally I would love to own a Wii, but I'd much rather have a 360, and a big part of that is due to the graphics. Key in point: Bioshock.
James @ Aug 17th 2007 8:26AM
Hold up, Nintendo isn't strong on the visual front?
You mean the people who brought us art direction in a GAME? Yoshis Island, decent 3D graphics (instead of the pixelated first 3D brought to us by Saturn and PS1), Windwaker?
WTF. You meant to say "Nintendo isn't strong on the GPU front" or something to that degree, but Nintendo not good at art? Wow.
But I agree with the other stuff you said. Graphics will always take a back seat, art direction will always be infront. Gameplay takes the lead. That's why I'm spending more on Virtual Console games than any dedicated game for my Wii, 360 or PS3.
megaStryke @ Aug 17th 2007 9:02AM
@parker
"Broad"? Who the hell uses that word anymore? Are you from the 20s or something?
@Nick
If the big reason you don't own a Wii is because you gotta have the latest and greatest in graphics then I've got news for you: you don't wanna buy a 360 OR a PS3. Why? Because better hardware featuring games with better graphics will appear down the road. Why not play good games NOW instead of overlooking good games just because they don't necessarily use the most up-to-date technology?
SoulBlade @ Aug 17th 2007 10:55AM
i gotta agree.. the graphics whore in me will be satisified by the PC and probably a PS3 - PC will have all the 360 goods (probably w/ dx10 goodness and more content - see: Gears. Bioshock dx10. Mass Effect when it comes, Crysis, Quake Wars, mm...), ps3 with some exclusives.
Then i've got my Wii, which a lot of my non gamer friends will actually play and enjoy. It's especially a bonus when the girl will play as well as she wouldn't come within ten feet of a 360.
syco @ Aug 17th 2007 1:54AM
Wait... Energy Tank Injected? It sounds and looks like you can take your own Energy Tank, which functions as a health reserve, and convert it into a more damageing attack. I think that's AWESOME.
meist3r @ Aug 17th 2007 6:42AM
Actually I think it's the Phaezon Suit Enhancement that uses a seperate energy tank.
Take a look:

The Space Marines have the same glowing power beam that Samus shoots in the Air Raid vid.
blk_ballard @ Aug 17th 2007 9:19AM
Okay, first of all, you can tell this video is not in 480p and 16:9 and that is the real reason that it looks so bad. I have a hauge HD tv and it looked terrible because it was in standard def crammed in an ugly blue box. Seriously, why can't the previews on the Wii channel be full screen? Anyway, I've seen clips of this game with a higher resolution and it does really have a graphical bump. Secondly, I have a question for those complaining about Samus just blasting random enemies. Have you ever played any previous Metroid Prime!?! It's one part first Person shooter... wait for it, and another part adventure game. Seriously, it's one minute of game footage!! There is a hell of a lot more to the game so just calm down!! If you just want to shoot random stuff in HD, get Halo 3 when it comes out. If you want a new spin on a first person shooter/ adventure game, get Metroid Prime 3! I know I will!
Defferoo @ Aug 17th 2007 2:02AM
what are you guys talking about? metroid prime was one of the best looking games of last-gen. seriously, retro is a beast at extracting the power of hardware. if you have NOT played metroid prime on a nice TV, it's hard to tell. I watched the videos, but it wasn't until i actually played the game that I realized how beautiful the game is. Everything is alive, there's always something moving around. This videos don't show the atmosphere at all, they're mostly trying to show the game mechanics.
jackbauer @ Aug 17th 2007 2:14AM
idk about some of the complaining 12 year olds on here but ima buy me this game and have fun. nothing will stop or change the fact that ima be having an enjoyabe and social-life consuming time with this game. haters be damned!
“ samus is just zis girl, you know”
