Super Metroid, Shinobi III, Neutopia hit Virtual Console
The original headline was something along the lines of "Samus and Shinobi tour Neutopia on Virtual Console" but honestly, the less time spent thinking up trite headlines the better. Today's incredible Virtual Console update has steamrolled our Monday productivity into a lackadaisical mush of "meh."
- Super Metroid (SNES, 1 player, 800 Wii points): Considered by many to be one of the greatest games of all time (evar), Super Metroid hardly requires a descriptive paragraph such as this one. Needless to say then, that it features Samus doing what she does best: murdering metroids, blasting evil brains and reminding us why we need to stay alive until August 27th.
- Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master (Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii points): The third entry in Sega's ninja kill-em-up series and arguably the best. As far as side-scrolling slashers go, the Shinobi one is your only hope... for gaming fun!
- Neutopia (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii points): Neutopia is often labeled as a Legend of Zelda clone. Somehow, we don't think it minds.

Agreed! Gotta download it now!
Radicoon @ Aug 20th 2007 11:07AM
You have proven yourself as a worthy first-poster. *bows*
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 20th 2007 8:58AM

Esshahn @ Aug 20th 2007 8:59AM

Kye @ Aug 20th 2007 9:08AM
*sobs*

hvnlysoldr @ Aug 20th 2007 1:12PM
We're sorry Mario/Link, but Rare is on another console.
It's been a pain with the lousy connection this morning. What with a little standing water on some streets and whatnot. Here's your new and exciting Luigi hat Link.

Looks like I need to get some Wii points. I had Neutopia when I was a kid but I was too young to figure the game out. Super Metroid has been on my want to play list for a long time...
ZenGaijin @ Aug 20th 2007 9:14AM
And now to doubly screw me over XBLA will announce Super Puzzle Fighter and Streets of Rage 2 this week.
Shadow @ Aug 20th 2007 9:16AM
none of the games appear on my console, i only have last week's titles
Lifted 0ne 4l9 @ Aug 20th 2007 9:20AM
try turning your system off then back on and rechecking
Lifted 0ne 4l9 @ Aug 20th 2007 9:19AM
nice Super Metroid is definitely one of the best games ever made, and i think i might check out Neutopia.
Kryptinite @ Aug 20th 2007 9:21AM
Quick question: Classic controller or should I get a Wavebird?
Zertoss @ Aug 20th 2007 9:25AM
The Gamecube controller sucks for SNES titles. On top of that, I can't even get my Wavebird to work on the Virtual Console. I'd get the Classic Controller.
Kryptinite @ Aug 20th 2007 9:37AM
Sweet, thanks! That's all I needed to know.
Josh Clark @ Aug 20th 2007 2:20PM
Personally, I am a huge fan of this controller:
http://www.the-nextlevel.com/features/hardware/hori-digital-controller/hori-vs-snes-1.jpg
The top one, I mean.
You'll have to check eBay, though. Lik-sang ran out (then went out of business; damn you Sony), and Play-Asia is out as well.
It's officially licensed by Nintendo, but made by Hori. It was designed for the Game Boy Player (the Select button is just a second Y button), but it works great with plenty of D-Pad-capable GameCube games and should work fine with the Wii, though I've never tried. (Annoyingly, the white button labels come off easily, but the thing still owns.)
Having briefly used a Classic Controller, I would say that they are about even, and it really depends on the game for which is better.
Kryptinite @ Aug 20th 2007 2:29PM
That is awesome! I'm totally looking for that right now.
Josh Clark @ Aug 20th 2007 2:50PM
If you have a modded GameCube/Wii then it makes emulators a lot easier to play. Trying to get back on topic here, I've played Super Metroid with it, and it worked flawlessly (especially since both Super Metroid and my SNES emulator let you map your own controls). I don't know if the Wii lets you set your own controls, but the defaults should be very usable. My only gripe is using Z for Select because Y is already in use, but that's pretty minor.
megaStryke @ Aug 20th 2007 9:22AM
The Virtual Console is taking no prisoners this week.
DC @ Aug 20th 2007 9:25AM
I'd be excited if it weren't for hte fact that I already have the actual cart for Super Metroid!
megaStryke @ Aug 20th 2007 9:32AM
Yeah, but have you played Super Metroid... on Wiid?
Rich @ Aug 20th 2007 10:08AM
so do I! (and they called me a fool for keeping all my old SNES stuff! muwahahahaha...!) ^_^
DarthDavid @ Aug 20th 2007 9:46AM
As soon as I get out of my damn office.....run home and download Super Metroid & Shinobi III this has been a great couple of weeks, (Persona 3, VC games & MP3). And the fall lineup didn't even start YET!!!! Video game over load =)
Mo @ Aug 20th 2007 10:26AM
Finally Super Metroid, I have been waiting for that game to come out since the announcement of the Virtual Console!
religiousjedi @ Aug 20th 2007 10:48AM
Time to see why the Metroid freaks lurv Super Metroid so much...unfortunately...it'll have to wait till after school.
Crono @ Aug 20th 2007 3:34PM
You probably won't be very impressed, as Super Metroid set many standards used today in its genre. Just about every castlevania since Symphony is a Super Metroid clone (only with vampires and zombies instead of aliens).
Jhongerkong @ Aug 20th 2007 11:26AM
none of the vc titles work for me either. and im in canada
mr mobius @ Aug 20th 2007 11:19AM
All Europe got on friday was Wave Race 64 and Cratermaze. A pretty dull week for Europe vc as only 2 titles and only wave race that interests me but I`m not spending money on something still have on N64.
Tibbles @ Aug 20th 2007 11:46AM
They don't officially go on the shop channel until 12pm EST every Monday.
So you have to wait 15 more minutes.
I'll be picking up Metroid. The other two don't really appeal to me. Mainly because I already have enough Zelda games, and Bioshock (PC) will take too much of my time which will leave me unable to play Shinobi.
Nice plug, huh.
Mike @ Aug 20th 2007 11:51AM
My Cheap side says "you have a SNES in the basement with a Super Metroid cart waiting for you," but the practical side of me is saying "don't be retarded, you'll never hook that thing up again. plus, it's convenient." The rest of me is saying take your meds, you're talking to yourself.
vidGuy @ Aug 20th 2007 12:05PM
Okay, everybody, it is now past 12 EST and the games are there. I'll see you suckas later, I'll be playing SM all day. HAHA to those stuck at school/work.
Kye @ Aug 20th 2007 12:37PM
Voted you up for the Locke avatar.
Bigfoot @ Aug 20th 2007 12:09PM
If any of you have never played Super Metroid, then I highly suggest you download it.
RD @ Aug 20th 2007 12:18PM
vidGuy, I thought you had more compassion than that? For shame ;)
Enjoy your day of Metroid!
vidGuy @ Aug 20th 2007 12:21PM
Not when Super Metroid is involved. Maybe I'll just bid you adieu!
RD @ Aug 20th 2007 12:25PM
I agree. My buddy and I have a full night of Super Metroid planned for Saturday.
Seriously, this game is as good a the hype. Joystiq should do a contest once a month for Wii Points, especially today. Key VC releases demand more hype!
WiNG @ Aug 20th 2007 12:47PM
I never played super metroid, i was a genesis fanboy. That said, my neighbor owned shinobi 3 and never let me borrow it because it is "too good to believe". Haha look who's laughing now... um... 15 years later.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 20th 2007 1:36PM
Finally Super Metroid. I've never got a chance to play with it and finally bought MP2:E off the interwebs. I will finally have played all the Metroids. Dang forget II...
rabidkeebler @ Aug 20th 2007 1:59PM
Dang it it isn't downloading. Tried 4 times now. Is anyone else having problems? (hoping it may be busy)
J.Goodwin @ Aug 20th 2007 2:03PM
Neutopia is brilliant.
I feel like I'm saying the same thing every week coming in here to praise whatever the latest Turbo release is, but all of you SERIOUSLY missed out on a brilliant piece of console history.
It's too bad you only get to live it vicariously through these shoddily emulated versions on the Wii, because the audio used to be brilliant as well.
License to ill @ Aug 20th 2007 4:27PM
Nothing new just another been there done that moment...
Super Metroid was a beast...
Raistlin @ Aug 20th 2007 3:02PM
Wooohooo! Time to fire up the Wii again! Until Bioshock shows up this week, of course. Loving 'Nobi 3 and Super Metroid! Has anyone else, besides Goodwin, played Neutopia? Is it really like LoZ? Is it worth it? Thanks, in advance, for your answers.
Number Six @ Aug 20th 2007 4:31PM
So is Neutopia a GOOD Zelda rip-off? Some LoZ knock-offs are lame as hell, others are pretty damn good (Golden Axe Warrior for SMS comes to mind).
Adv2k1 @ Aug 20th 2007 8:42PM
Super Metroid on VC lets you change controls around so you can use cube if you want. You can even change it to play in Japanese. Heck you can use left control stick to move instead of control pad. I am really enjoying this game again, its a blast it just has so much polish and DOES NOT HOLD YOUR HAND, YOUR OWN YOUR OWN!! THat Hori pad they carry at Movie Trading company near my house, its pointless since I own Classic controller and is better layout and has control sticks so I can play many games not just some.
Raikage @ Aug 21st 2007 3:58AM
You forgot the moonwalk...
I started singing "Billy Jean" when I landed on Zebes...
Ah good times...
Raikage @ Aug 21st 2007 4:00AM
"TurboGrafx16"............Wha???
