Nintendo and Lexus host Wii Tennis tournament
Nintendo and Lexus hosted an intense Wii Tennis competition in Rockefeller Center yesterday. After competing for three consecutive days, the winner will get a free one year lease on a Lexus IS F and VIP tickets to the US Open finals. In the end, Benjamin Melinger proved to be the most hardcore of this typically not-so-hardcore game, with his heightened reflexes and appropriate attire. The matches, as you can see in the video above, end up being less about careful position of shots, but the ability to flail your arms as quickly as possible. Nintendo once again captured the hearts of the non-gamer, as onlookers couldn't help but be amazed by the spectacle, and wanted to try Wii for themselves.

A free one year lease? What a crappy prize.
How about A BRAND NEW CAR! For free, of course.
el tonot @ Sep 7th 2007 1:08PM
Whats worse is that there are 100s of thousands of people in this country that are paying a 10k-40k mark-up to drive a Toyota!!!!!!!!!! I wonder how many Lexus owners are aware of this. Their 33K ES330 is nothing more but a Camry XLE with a 8K markup!!!!!!
mr nimblewick @ Sep 7th 2007 1:10PM
And how much did all those !!!!!!!! cost?
el tonot @ Sep 7th 2007 1:15PM
I know a prize that costs you money (insurance, gas, etc) and if you total it (since it is a lease) I hope you have good insurance!!!!!!!!!!!! Ths prize will set you back thousands in costs....whats the point?
mr nimblewick @ Sep 7th 2007 1:27PM
All prizes cost you money. That new car you got off Price is Right? Planning on paying taxes for it?
mr nimblewick @ Sep 7th 2007 1:06PM
"end up being less about careful position of shots, but the ability to flail your arms as quickly as possible"
Nice try for flaimbait, but the video clearly shows otherwise.
AlanRickman @ Sep 7th 2007 1:07PM
Seriously. gb/2 PSPFB, Yoon.
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 7th 2007 1:06PM
Now, thats good publicity.
AlanRickman @ Sep 7th 2007 1:08PM
And you, get a haircut.
unreal mccoy @ Sep 7th 2007 2:07PM
I agree. I'm tired of seeing your shaggy mug on this website.
BRING IN THE SHEARS!
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 7th 2007 1:07PM
"end up being less about careful position of shots, but the ability to flail your arms as quickly as possible"
It depends in how you move your arm, cause you need to specify to where you want the ball to go, left, center or rigth.
Shagittarius @ Sep 7th 2007 1:15PM
Fernando Ball placement has nothing to do with how you swing the remote, it has everything to do with timing.
waves @ Sep 7th 2007 1:36PM
It's more than just timing. My friend can put some wicked spin on the balls in Wii tennis.
bm @ Sep 7th 2007 3:38PM
Nah don't bother, if it's anything more complicated than pressing buttons, it's too much for poor shaggi to comprehend.
phattie @ Sep 7th 2007 1:08PM
My 2 year old nephew can pwn anyone at WiiTennis.. and he doesnt even know what tennis is.. he just waves his arms aimlessly (half the time not even looking at the TV) and somehow thats good enough.
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 7th 2007 1:10PM
False... to play like the guys in the video, you need precision.
mr nimblewick @ Sep 7th 2007 1:13PM
Flailing can be effective against people who don't know how to play (as swinging too much is better than swinging too late), but skill will win out in the end.
hvnlysoldr @ Sep 7th 2007 1:14PM
Too lazy to sift through

It's funny how when people suck at a game so bad that they get pwned by noobz that they blame the game's controls and say anybody could do it. This implies that anybody could do it BUT THEM. Nice try. I would totally destroy your nephew. I could beat him at Wii Tennis, I could jump higher, and I could read faster. WHAT WHAT BRING IT.
phattie @ Sep 7th 2007 2:15PM
^ i dont know.. he has this crasy move where he twirls the wiimote on end.. 100% win.. dont think anything can beat that move.
Ska Oreo @ Sep 7th 2007 2:21PM
Phattie go away, please. You almost make Fernando look good. Almost.

Pirates wore eye patches for night vision.
mr nimblewick @ Sep 7th 2007 1:20PM
I wear night patches to attract the species I mate with... one-eyed prostitutes.
AlanRickman @ Sep 7th 2007 1:24PM
I wear an eye patch so I can see sour grapes better at night, with their jelly like skin.
Word of the street. @ Sep 7th 2007 1:26PM
The first time I gave mr nimblewick a 1+ ,LOL.
Rubang B @ Sep 7th 2007 1:30PM
I wear an eyepatch because 1972 David Bowie told me to in a dream.
AlanRickman @ Sep 7th 2007 1:36PM
And lo, on the eighth day, the hvnlyspamr was thusly spammed accordingly.

AlanRickman @ Sep 7th 2007 2:23PM
Dont let a suitcase become your big fork, and spoon.
hvnlysoldr @ Sep 7th 2007 2:25PM
I'll be back.
Rubang B @ Sep 7th 2007 1:13PM
Come on, the game's been out for 10 months and you STILL haven't even played it? It's all about timing, you swing early to hit the ball towards the inside and you swing late to hit it towards the outside, and any time in the middle will hit all the angles in between. You angle your wrist high or low to try to lob it or barely skim the net or even hit the net. Just because the pros play super fast doesn't mean they're not paying attention to all this timing and all these angles. I play that fast too, but I always win. I am the bext! A couple of my friends have been able to give me a run for my money after they got their own Wiis though.
Bluebrake @ Sep 7th 2007 1:27PM
These guys kind of suck! The outfit is awesome though.
Word of the street. @ Sep 7th 2007 1:32PM
I always wanted to sing charmillionare "Drivin' Dirty" while driving a Lexus.LOL
Seriously is Nintendo trying to make Videogames a real sport again?
Word of the street. @ Sep 7th 2007 1:33PM
I wear an eye patch because Darth Vader from the planet Vulcan told me that if I didn't he would melt my brain.
Word of the street. @ Sep 7th 2007 1:34PM
I curse you reply system.
WiNG @ Sep 7th 2007 1:40PM
Anyone claiming you win this tournament with random flailing sucks at Wii tennis. I can pull really strong slices but my one friend always destroys me. He was captain of the tennis team, he can ALWAYS land the super serves, put NASTY top spin on every ball.
Seriously, Wii tennis does take insane skill to be good. I am mediocre at best.
Rubang B @ Sep 7th 2007 1:52PM
I have a friend who can put the spin on and he scares the hell out of me because I can't spin at all yet, but I still totally rock him. If he truly masters the spin, he will destroy me. I'll have to break his arms.
Hirsbrunner @ Sep 7th 2007 2:14PM
"I'll have to break his arms."
That's actually under the Tips section of the game manual.
Sean @ Sep 7th 2007 2:25PM
No, that is "Please go outside, you tub of goo."
hvnlysoldr @ Sep 7th 2007 2:55PM
That's from the message that comes after every few rounds.
Crono @ Sep 7th 2007 3:11PM
Is it time to go home yet?
Ranko @ Sep 7th 2007 3:18PM
"No Wii-mote!"
"No Wii!"
"No free car!"
"Final Destination!"
Rubang B @ Sep 7th 2007 9:16PM
BINGO!
ThornedVenom @ Sep 7th 2007 5:32PM
Rockstar, take note: this is what we expect from your TableTennis port on Wii. Fast action. Intense reflexes. Pro gaming.
Wiimote style.
