Financial Times declares console war Wii-ner
The US NPD figures will be out tomorrow, but today the Financial Times reported that Nintendo's Wii sales have overtaken the Xbox 360 to make it the top-selling next-gen now-gen console with 9 million sold. The Xbox 360 sits at 8.9 million and the PS3 with 3.7 million. Remember, these are sold units and not those fudge-a-licious shipped numbers. Nintendo last held the top spot in the console market over ten years ago with the Super Nintendo system, before the reign of PlayStation.
The data is the combination of the Japanese figures, NPD from the US and the GfK of Germany, which follows Euro sales. As a consolation prize for Sony fanboys, remember that the PS2 still owns all with over 100 million units. The piece closes by saying that the PS3's problem is price, the Xbox 360 doesn't sell in Japan and the Wii just hits the spot with a $250 price tag and strong sales in all three major markets.

You've taken all of the wit out of the NDF gag.

OH shit!!! I didn't know it was a 10 month race.
samfish @ Sep 12th 2007 7:27PM
You can't be part of two defense forces!
Me? I'm part of the SDF, apparently. Don't let Naked Peach fool you. She's just to lure in the NDF before I...do...whatever..it is one does when the _DF's fight.
ukickmydog (NDF - Heart Ring) @ Sep 12th 2007 9:03PM
fine, I've chosen my side!
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 12th 2007 9:58PM
But I've already been Heart for a couple days now sir. And I invented all our weapons months ago in a Nintendonian volcano.
Lord Chako @ Sep 12th 2007 11:55PM
Maybe I'm too old (24), but I really don't get all this "NDF, MDF, SDF" shit.
Why would you rigorously defend a corporation, whose only purpose is to take your money?
I'm not saying you can't have a preference, but you shouldn't devote yourself to only one company.
You will miss a lot of good games
To defend one company and pretend they can do no wrong, only means you won't be able to help them further better themselves, and make gaming better as a whole.

At first I didn't want to change my name but after several other members did so so as to clarify whose position is whose, I did to reflect I had the wind ring. Some of our ring bearers have a 360 like Fernando, it's just we prefer Nintendo. I myself had a Genesis, PSX, and PS2 because games were heading their way that Nintendo's systems didn't have. But the current situation of such high entrance costs plus on the games themselves has cemented my like for Nintendo. We the NDF formed to stop the FUD of the competitors and say we don't want our hobby to escalate out of price range. I sometimes got tempered or stubborn and flame, but I try to respond to the topic or make a joke instead of being fanatic.
Kye (NDF - Earth Ring) @ Sep 13th 2007 4:21AM
Samfish, when we fight we pull out all sorts of facts and figures, triumphs and losses etc to support our arguments that our chosen system is teh gooder than yours.
Here's the latest list of NDF Elite members:
Jody Anthony (Yellow Lion)
Crono (Fiire Ring)
Kye (Black Lion & Earth ring)
Nintendo Fanbot (Power/weapon unknown...[there has to be one mysterious guy])
Rubang B ( Heart Ring, Sensor bar grapling hook, bearer of the Zapper Gun and Wii remote light sabre, other weapons too numerous to mention)
Fernando Rocker (Water ring, Green Lion & nunchuks)
Silky Love (Red Lion)
Hvnlysoldr (Blue Lion & Wiind ring)
Fatass, SummerCamp & Ken on leave of absence.
Heart Ring to be re-issued.
Other weapons in storage.
end*
ukickmydog, welcome to the ranks.
Lord Chako, I'm 25 and it's only fun. I wouldn't actually go out there and break anyone's PS3 or chain myself to the Nintendo headquarters or anything. Like hvnlysoldr said, we own other consoles, it's just that Nintendos are our favourite.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 13th 2007 8:04AM
We're just showing off our rings man. It all started when we found out our lions could merge into a megazord sentai thing. Then we found out we all had a passion for Nintendo. Then we got matching rings. I'm 24. I support Nintendo because I support their gaming philosophy and I think they're helping the industry more than hurting it. I didn't even own a GameCube. I took the entire 6th generation off for StarCraft. I'm back now, and I'm better than ever.

flameofdoom666 @ Sep 12th 2007 5:59PM
I enjoy my Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Paper Mario, Fire Emblem, No More Heroes, Resident Evil, WarioWare, Mario Kart, Battalion Wars, and oh yeah- not a dragon flying game that gets 5.0 scores.
Lifted 0ne 4l9 @ Sep 12th 2007 6:57PM
Actually i enjoy zelda, metroid, resident evil 4, paper mario, and who can deny how fun wii sports can be when you have company, they make great companions to Bioshock, GRAW 2, Oblivion, Burnout Revenge and then lets not forget the many DS games Wii60DS works out pretty well.
Ouch PS3 is only about 17% of the sold current gen consoles out there
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 12th 2007 10:02PM
I enjoy my Elebits, Metal Slug Anthology, Sonic, Godfather, Wii Sports, candlelit dinners, long walks on the beach, and showing ladies my Pokemanz.
OrganicShadow @ Sep 12th 2007 5:25PM
Winner? Already? My "place where i keep my wii games on my game shelf" spot says otherwise. In fact, it's going to be even worse pretty soon when I trade in or sell my monkeyball, blazing angels, and wii play. Game-wise the wii has been a huge disappointment for me and makes me regret my target camp-out back in january.
The end of this year and the beginning of the next is looking BETTER, but the 360 still has PS3 and wii SPANKED in the game selection department. Quantity does not always beat quality, yes, but looking at the average reviews of games coming out across all systems im seeing on a whole PSP games getting 1 point higher than DS games and 360 games getting 1 and 2 whole points higher than wii games.
So as much as I don't like the 360 and don't ever want to get one, it's still pretty much top dog in the next/new gen space at the moment. Numbers don't mean jack when the wii is still a fashion accessory like the ipod. PS3 and wii need to show me some games and then i'll decide who's been creaming crops.
SKI @ Sep 13th 2007 8:25AM
"monkeyball, blazing angels, and wii play. Game-wise the wii has been a huge disappointment for me"
Well, there's your problem right there, Mac.
pete @ Sep 12th 2007 5:26PM
/sigh/ and what percentage of those Wiis are being played?
Exo @ Sep 12th 2007 5:31PM
What percentage of the 360s work?
Sean @ Sep 12th 2007 5:40PM
@exo
Your arguement is erroneous. At least the people who have broken 360s can return it and play many excellent games when they get it back.
vidGuy @ Sep 12th 2007 5:42PM
92.189%
Exo @ Sep 12th 2007 5:54PM
Its not an argument really, its just if you want to be picky about one side then why not the other?
FrankTheCrank @ Sep 12th 2007 5:29PM
f-ing duh!
Pricing is everything!
hvnlysoldr (NDF - Wind Ring) @ Sep 12th 2007 5:30PM
Tell that to the GameCube!
Lifted 0ne 4l9 @ Sep 12th 2007 8:18PM
Actually Gamecube didn't sell that bad it was in 2nd place worldwide, yes it was in 3rd in the states but the world is bigger than America, and the Gamecube made more profit than PS2 or Xbox, so 2nd place worldwide and made more money than either of the competitors Gamecube really didn't do bad at all
hvnlysoldr (NDF - Wind Ring) @ Sep 12th 2007 5:30PM
Ken is Saruman, resurrected Miyamoto is Gandalf, Reggie is Aragorn, Iwata is Frodo, and Sega is Gollum.
upz @ Sep 12th 2007 5:57PM
hvnlysoldr is a dork.
samfish @ Sep 12th 2007 7:31PM
No, a True Dork would've mentioned Radagast The Brown.
hvnlysoldr is CLEARLY just a pouser.
Tom @ Sep 12th 2007 7:48PM
Radagast The Brown is the Zune.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 12th 2007 10:21PM
Shigeru Miyafroto is carrying the ring, but Sakurai Gamgee will be carrying Miyafroto when Smash Bros. comes out. I also think that this gen Sony is Saruman but Microsoft is Sauron. And yes, Sega with their Mario vs. Sonic is definitely Gollum. Halo 3 is Orodruin, but Smash Bros./Galaxy will be slam dunking the ring this Christmas, and then flying back home on the backs of some flying Wii Fit hoverboards.
Kye (NDF - Earth Ring) @ Sep 13th 2007 4:45AM
Sony is SOO Sauron.
And a true dork would have mentioned the two wizards that wore sea-blue and went to the east and were never seen again.
N-Zero(NDF-Leader) @ Sep 12th 2007 5:32PM
YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS PEOPLE!!!!! It means that 3rd parties might start making decent games so they could get money off the install base of the Wii. But this is really good news for nintendo. They have toppled a the 360 even though the 360 has been out for almost two years now. it only took them 9 months to do this. This great. The Wii might finally get some good games from 3rd parties. I want to see something like Mass Effect(gameplay-and story wise) opn the Wii or something like Metal Gear Solid 4, and maybe even some rally good FPS's with controls as good or better then Metriod Prime 3. "This is a glorious day this is"
OOOOOO and my Fellow NDFers I think the sony bots get the point don't rub it in okay, you'll ruin the good news.
phattie @ Sep 12th 2007 5:39PM
This is a fallacy... Wii having the most market share does not mean anything. Do you think you will ever see:
MGS4, Mass Effect, NG2, GTA4, Oblivion, DMC, CoD4, Unreal, Half life 2, etc..
These games will go PS3/360 before they go on the Wii... 3rd party devs are not going develop original content for it unless it is a mini-game, PS2 port, or a movie tie in. You only have to look at the release schedule to see this.
Word of the street. @ Sep 12th 2007 5:51PM
Sadly it could not work that way.
For example a 3rd party game that sells a crapton in it first day, let say Mario party 8.Is Hudson going to use the money from MP8 to improve their next games by making them more enjoyable maybe more stylish with better minigames, online?, no they are going to keep developing lazy sequels a la Megaman until no one cares and then they ask why no one is buying their crap.
IMO what is going is that casuals don’t read reviews so they keep buying games without knowing if they are good or not, in the case of more experienced gamers they read reviews, rent games etc etc.
Seriously I think this is sad. Nintendo is making cash thanks to all the hype and by releasing 4 good games they already beat a system that has more good games and a much richer online experience.
vidGuy @ Sep 12th 2007 5:54PM
That's not a fallacy. No, the Wii won't get the games you listed because they were developed for other consoles and won't work on the Wii. That doesn't exclude the same developers or other third parties from making high-caliber games for the Wii.
Danners @ Sep 12th 2007 5:58PM
So what you're saying is that you want games that already exist for other platforms? You are aware that could just buy the other systems to play those games, right?
Sean @ Sep 12th 2007 5:32PM
Numbers, schnumbers. There's a reason I haven't turned on my Wii since April, and it's not because I can't afford new batteries for it, I swear.
AJ @ Sep 12th 2007 6:26PM
that reason would be?
Sean @ Sep 12th 2007 8:05PM
There hasn't been anything worth buying other than Metroid Prime 3, but I never finished 1 or 2.
NATO_Duke @ Sep 12th 2007 5:36PM
Mine gets turned on once a week cause I feel guilty for owning it and not using it - but the games just aren't there for it.
Also, keep in mind that the numbers are bs as we all know that Wii owners always buy 2 of these things just to make Nintendo look more powerful! (
blooh @ Sep 12th 2007 5:42PM
do they duct tape them to gether to get 4 gamecubes?
Neon Jebus @ Sep 12th 2007 5:45PM
And knowing that someone out there actually wants to play and own a Wii is why I just sold mine this week. I felt bad that someone that didn't even like it was lucky enough to own one. So I sold it.
Now a couple of kids are going to have a kick ass Christmas because they will get something that is still hard to find. And I hope they love the games...because I sure didn't.
captainawesome @ Sep 12th 2007 7:43PM
We don't buy 2 to make Nintendo look more powerful, we buy 2 so we can duct tape them together and get the next Nintendo system. But don't tell anyone, it's a secret.
Shagittarius @ Sep 12th 2007 5:39PM
