Wii Transfer 2.5 now includes movie streaming
Still interested in using the Nintendo Wii as a media center? Really? For the Mac lovers and Wii owners looking for another way to stream video to their television, Riverfold has released an updated version of Wii Transfer. In version 2.5, the developers have added drag-and-drop video streaming, background music for slideshows and the ability to use Firefox / Safari bookmarks via the Wii browser.
The program also lets you share pictures, music (as MP3 or unprotected AAC) and iTunes playlists. Sister site TUAW conducted an interview with creator Manton Reese. Wii Transfer 2.5.1 (Mac only) is now available for trial and $19 for license.

Hikaru @ Sep 25th 2007 10:25PM
What?? This is not about Halo 3? What's happening with teh worldz?
marcandrer @ Sep 25th 2007 10:34PM
Ive been using something similar to that for around 6 month now on a device called a PS3.
What I'm suprised to learn is that the Wii actualy have LAN capabilities.
kennethrios @ Sep 25th 2007 11:46PM
Well you did pay twice as much.
finnith @ Sep 25th 2007 10:42PM
The Gamecube is a better media centre.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 25th 2007 10:56PM
Whoa, Wii news!? I guess you had to dig pretty deep to find something that wasn't about Halo, eh?
Fox318 @ Sep 25th 2007 11:02PM
With all due respect to Wii owners... do you really need to use a Wii as a Media Center.
Flyy (NDF) @ Sep 25th 2007 11:04PM
The same could be asked of PS3 and Xbox360 owners. Everyone likes to get the most for their money =p
Fox318 @ Sep 25th 2007 11:31PM
I understand that but chances are if you have a mac...then why not just use your mac or get an apple tv. Its like using a spoon when you should use a fork. Sure the spoon works but you get better performance out of a fork.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Sep 25th 2007 11:34PM
Because AppleTV kinda sucks...
Gamerextrordinaire @ Sep 25th 2007 11:45PM
So does the Nintendo Wii.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 26th 2007 12:13AM
For the first 3 weeks in my new apartment, I ate everything with a spoon. We had 10 spoons and 1 fork and I never wanted to wash it. What's your point?
Ordeith @ Sep 26th 2007 12:38AM
Because Apple TV costs more than an Xbox 360 and does less than a Wii.
Bidoof Protection Military @ Sep 25th 2007 11:10PM
Not interested, but I gotta admit I'm impressed by how crafty some folks are.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Sep 25th 2007 11:33PM
I have an HTPC which suits me fine.
Although having access to my iTunes library on my TV sounds good. Worth $20 bucks, though?
Hmm....
colin @ Sep 25th 2007 11:59PM
an HTPC should let you browse your itunes library on your tv ... using xp media center?
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Sep 26th 2007 12:48AM
I don't use Windows Media Center, though. It kinda sucked, too, I thought.
If I had that kind of disposable income, I'd buy a Mac Mini and a Media Center program called Media Central, since it does damn near everything and supports lots of video codecs and such.

colin @ Sep 26th 2007 4:38AM
i was under the impression that with an HTPC, you could run windows on your tv with whatever codecs, itunes library, etc.; basically anything that'll run, runs.
colin @ Sep 26th 2007 4:41AM
cool program, but i swore an oath against mac when my dad lost our family wealth on them in the early 90's. but that fanboy war is neither here nor there.
waves @ Sep 25th 2007 11:35PM
I've been using an old Xbox as my media player for a few years now. I'm pretty sure it's better than anything this gen has to offer. Console makers aren't free to make a media center that most people would want. A console has to be thoroughly hacked before it can be a good media player.
Ordeith @ Sep 26th 2007 12:41AM
If they really do add DivX/Xvid support to the 360 with the fall update it will get pretty darned close. :)
Gambit @ Sep 26th 2007 12:10AM
I don't like Macs, but I do like Linux.
Raikage (NDF - PK THUNDER RING) @ Sep 26th 2007 12:54AM
I have a mac(book Pro) and a Wii(ner?), I'll definately check this out, thanks!
Ken Seang @ Sep 26th 2007 12:56AM
Cool app, but I usually plug my laptop to my HDTV and do all the media from there.
fawazr @ Sep 26th 2007 3:26AM
If you're a Mac owner, you should know that VLC streams media over networks, plays anything, and is free. It just doesn't have the processor intensive FrontRow-like GUI that's so prone to locking up on big files.
And as a side rant, every (absurdly expensive) mac should be able to play flac and xvid out of the box; owners shouldn't have to illegally "hack" a product just in order to get their money's worth.
s-goat @ Sep 26th 2007 3:34AM
"Mac lovers and Wii owners"
*shudders*
timmy @ Sep 26th 2007 9:56AM
I've tried Orb and TVersity with my Wii and I've given up trying to stream video -- it looks terrible, when you can get it to work. The Wii just can't handle it. Works great for music though.

And as a note, what about Red Kawa's Wii Media Center X.
Its free and for windows.
