Nintendo announces free Wii Remote Jacket
Nintendo just let us know about the Wii Remote Jacket, a grippy silicon sleeve that wraps around your Wiimote, ensuring it remains firmly in your grasp instead of lodged in the skull of a nearby loved one. Now, before you accuse Nintendo of climbing aboard the Wii-peripheral junk bandwagon, we should let you know how serious they are about the Wii Remote Jacket: they're giving the things away for free!
Bundled with hardware like the Wii console, Wii remotes, and Wii Play (which of course comes bundled with a free Wiimote) shipping to retailers on October 2nd, the Wii Remote Jacket should be available with those products as early as October 15th. Already got a Wii with an armada of Wii Remote missiles that need cushioning? Go to nintendo.com, or call 1-866-431-8367 to place your order (note: you can order 'em now, but the free sleeves won't ship until the week of October 15). Just punch in your console's serial number (what, you don't know it by heart?) and order up to four sleeves for your Wiimote collection.
Update: Many of you are getting errors when trying to submit your serial number. We think it best if you hold off a couple hours (maybe even a day or so!) and let the site get on its feet before hammering away at it. Let us know when your transaction goes through!

More like a Wii Hefty Bag.

Tim Burns @ Oct 1st 2007 11:51PM
Anybody else getting a 404 error after submitting your serial?
tako9 @ Oct 1st 2007 11:54PM
Yep, got a 404 error once... tried to do it again and got "you have exceeded blah blah" and now I can't order any. It never asked for my address or anything, so... I don't know what will happen.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Oct 2nd 2007 12:27AM
it's because you're all hammering the website
ebob9 @ Oct 1st 2007 11:54PM
Ward off class-action suits with their new Wii-Condom!
My 8yr-old daughter broke my 47" LCD playing Wii Tennis. To be fair to Nintendo, she has very skinny arms, and there was no way the strap would stay tight. She just barely grazed the LCD, but that was enough.
ThornedVenom @ Oct 2nd 2007 2:27AM
Ouch, sorry to hear that.
Could it be proof that the Wii is actually NOT intended for kids?
Koopaknight29 @ Oct 1st 2007 11:53PM
Hmm, free you say...
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Oct 1st 2007 11:56PM
now you have an excuse to not use the strap :)
pretty cool that they're free. too bad for tako9 and the others who are hammering the website and get screwed
Michael C. Sherrin @ Oct 1st 2007 11:57PM
This is quite possibly the most important Wii add-on. Seriously. It's just another way to make dirty jokes about playing with our Wiis.

the sad part is this will probably make people suddenly run out and buy Wii's amidst losing this wide-spread non-informed non-gaming consumer fear that everyone with a Wii has a broken TV. You know, the people who get their gaming news from CNN.
Joshua @ Oct 2nd 2007 12:00AM
Unbelievable. Why is this such a problem? Outside of little kids or people who have poor motor skills (as in a disability), why is any of this necessary? Wrist straps? "Jackets"? It's tragic, really.
Charlie @ Oct 9th 2007 6:54PM
Yeah, this really shouldn't have been a problem in the first place. If people just calmed the eph down while playing, (a) they wouldn't have let go of the remote and (b) if they did, it wouldn't have flown at enough force to snap the strap.
That all said... Oblong sleeves of silicone are nice when they're free.
phattie @ Oct 2nd 2007 12:06AM
Looks like its ribbed... for her pleasure of course.
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 2nd 2007 1:07AM
Don't listen. For her pleasure is a terrible lie.
Drew @ Oct 2nd 2007 2:01AM
Turn it inside out and it's ribbed for your pleasure...
That aside it's nice to get free stuff from Nintendo, and it's cool to get something for the Wiimote.
skittens @ Oct 2nd 2007 12:18AM
This is what happens when you put videogames infront of old people, girlfriends, and anyone else not weened on the sweet nipple of gaming since youth...they get overly excited, freak out, and start throwing wiimotes through walls/TVs/children.
Nintendo, the world was not ready for you to expand your audience, and no amount of jackets/improved straps/foam helmets/warning screens is going to change that. The masses just aren't ready to be playing with power
Fish @ Oct 2nd 2007 12:19AM
I got 404'd...
My real question is, is anyone actually ordering any less than four?
CouchPotato99 @ Oct 2nd 2007 12:24AM
Of course I know my serial number! I mean, come on, it's shorter than my friend code!
michas_pi @ Oct 2nd 2007 3:10AM
Oh man, that comment must have marinated in winsauce overnight, because it seriously wins.
Bryan Law @ Oct 2nd 2007 12:37AM
Crap, tried to order some, and got a weird error. Now the system won't let me order any... :( Emailed Customer support...
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 2nd 2007 12:38AM
I'm gonna put it on my dick as soon as it arrives.
Trenchalicious @ Oct 2nd 2007 12:42AM
LULZ, winnar!
Roddie @ Oct 2nd 2007 12:46AM
This is to coincide with the VC release of The Lost Levels; it will make you want to smash your Wii Remote.
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 2nd 2007 1:06AM
Bah, I went to place my order, and the window got an error, and now it tells me I have exceeded my limit for the serial number I entered. So I guess no sleeves for me. :(
I'm really heart broken about this.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Oct 2nd 2007 1:12AM
it's because all of you idiots are hammering their site at the same time
the shit doesn't even ship for 2 weeks, have some patience, and if you already got fucked, email their tech support
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 2nd 2007 1:21AM
How many people could be hammering their web site? You think there are a hundred thousand wii owners reading a late night joystiq post and they all decided to flock there at once? The website was moving fast, it just errored.
This also reminded me to get them to delete my old wii's serial number so that I can enter the replacement's #. Damn graphical glitches!
Anonymous @ Oct 7th 2007 1:15PM
look i ordered mine but I can seem to know if i did because the freakin thing won't show up on my order list.
zeioIIDX @ Oct 2nd 2007 1:38AM
Ditto, I get that error too. It says to try back after 24 hours though. I can always just call the number I guess...
captainawesome @ Oct 2nd 2007 1:25AM
Wow, earlier I was making cracks about a silicone dildo cover for the Wii remote. Now there actually is one. And from Nintendo, at that.
ssuk @ Oct 2nd 2007 2:24PM
There's already 3rd party 'jackets' for Wii, as well as little sticky pads to stick on the back and side of the Wii-mote to get grip. However, Nintendo is now proving these things.
However, what's the point of these? To make you grip better? To protect the Wii-mote or whatever it's about to smash into? Seems pretty poor foresight that Nintendo didn't just add a grippy-part to the actual remote, like the battery compartment is made of rubber or something. But whatever...
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Oct 2nd 2007 1:46AM
I already have 4 third party condoms. I gots black, blue, green (ribbed), and hot pink. But these do look better with that weird bulbous head.
BPM (FDF - Hypno-Toad) @ Oct 2nd 2007 1:47AM
It looks ridiculous. But, hey. Free is free.
Adv2k1 @ Oct 2nd 2007 2:07AM
free is good, I don't care how it looks.
ThornedVenom @ Oct 2nd 2007 2:29AM
Is it effective? Who cares, free swag!
Jeff @ Oct 2nd 2007 2:51AM
Free swag or not, its ass ugly...it takes away the entire smooth asthetic look of the Wiimote...just like the idiots who wrap their iPods in 3 layers of silicone skins.
Robin @ Oct 2nd 2007 4:11AM

Squibmacbooth @ Oct 2nd 2007 6:16AM

BOOTHY128 @ Oct 2nd 2007 5:54AM
ooooh great, no option for us uk gamers? thats again for screwing us over nintendo. i mean, whats the big fucking deal, bitch? lol
Squibmacbooth @ Oct 2nd 2007 6:13AM
WHOOPS!!! i opened my mouth too soon. sorry Nintendo, don't sent Bowser around to kidnap my girlfriend....and then......just keep her in a room. doing nothing.....all day.
-_-
Davedamon @ Oct 2nd 2007 6:43AM
Anyone know a way for us Brit Wii players to get hold of some of this sweet wii-condoms?
tone @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:52AM
Good news, now when if fly's out of my hand it won't tear it up, just whoever it hits. ;)
Don't forget, this product has already been out, just not for free and available in many different colors.
http://buy-wii.net/2007/10/02/protect-your-wiimote-for-free/
Ashley Morgan @ Oct 2nd 2007 3:28PM
You can already buy something similar to this on ebay but different colours but if it's free why not i've just ordered 4
WiNG @ Oct 2nd 2007 8:44AM
I dunno what kind of message Ninty is trying to send?
"Our products are so inherently dangerous we don't trust you to use them"??
I think next they should make a Wii "safety", where the wiimotes lock to the console, and in order to use them 4 people must insert and turn 4 different keys simultaneously.
And if you thought that's bad, wait till you hear that the keys each have a 24 digit friend code.
zelderman @ Oct 3rd 2007 11:50PM
that thing looks REALLY gay. I wouldn't order one, even if it was free... OH it is. It's still gay.
P.S. I still like the Wii
duncand3000 @ Oct 5th 2007 2:32PM
try the uk website i got straight onto it
