Apologies to hasty readers who initially saw that as "Miyamoto makes out with Economist award." That isn't to say Nintendo's revered game designer is ungrateful to be in the company of an "Innovation Award for Consumer Goods," but his joy isn't likely to extend beyond a hearty smile, tinged with concern over just how many of these things that mantelpiece can support.
The UK publication announced its recognition of Shigeru Miyamoto's contribution to society at a ceremony held at London's Science Museum, reports MCV. Tom Standage, business editor at The Economist, added that when it comes to video games, Mario and his maker are quite unavoidable. "No one is more identified with modern video games than Shigeru Miyamoto," he said. "His pioneering vision and creativity truly created a new category of entertainment."
You won't catch us arguing with that. ('Specially not with the comments section activated.)

I wonder what video gaming would be like if Miyamoto hadn't made Mario or Link. I mean, I'm not saying gameplay evolution would've grinded to a halt, but I think things might've taken an alternate path to what they're at today.

While Joust is amazing, I prefer Gunpei Yokoi's Balloon Fight, but mostly for the 1 player Balloon Trip mode and the amazing music, so I guess I prefer arcade Joust for 2 player action. Huh. Is there a name for "thinking out loud" when you're using a keyboard instead of talking?

1) Your average platformer will consist of only shooting up stuff.
2) Stage design would still mainly be an afterthought as opposed to a core aspect of gameplay.
3) 3D cameras would completely suck, games would go 3D without any thoughts of how to make a 2D game work in 3D, etc
3a) And no one would experiemnt on how to make use of 3D illusions and graphical niftiness.
Hmm.....

We probably wouldn't have video games, or at least good ones. Gaming pre-NES was dying and no one was really that interested. Super Mario Bros really breathed new life into the industry.

Poor dude... Right I'm pleased for Miyamoto though I'm not sure it'll score points on the wife-o-meter.

10 years? Ha! Pikmin, Nintendogs, Wii Sports. That's within 6 years, and none of them were sequels.

Its gonna be pretty interesting to have seen the fall of the father of the Playstation and to watch the future fall of Miyamota when his strategy for the Wii Fails all in the same generation.

Question Shag: Have you ever liked a single Miyamoto game? If so, what is/are it/they?

Miayamota was awesome through Mario 64. After that he sorta lost it in my opinion. Back on the Nintendo 64 days Nintendo was my favorite platform beacuse of him.
The guy deserves all the credit he gets, I just don't think personally hes done anything great since the N64. I still love the guy though, I just dont worship at the altar of Nintendo unreasonably.
Its like with the Wii Miyamota said, I've lost it, I'm no good anymore, I need a gimmik that will replace actual good games to disguise this fact.
Thats what I see in the Wii.

Fernando was way worse than Shagi. Besides, you probably haven't seen Shagi really troll. Compared to about a year ago he has really cooled it down.
