No frills to be found in Okami's Wii port
If you were hoping that the recently announced Wii version of Okami would lure you back into its beautiful world with new environments, bosses, weapons and so forth, you're about to have your somewhat optimistic viewpoint obscured by one Didier Malenfant. In an interview with IGN, the president of Ready At Dawn explains that Okam-Wii (see what we did there?) will be an "exact port of the PS2 version," save for the magical brush strokes which will now correspond to motions of the Wiimote. Malenfant argues that messing with the game in any form would simply draw ire from Clover devotees.
Strangely, the same crowd is currently wagging their fingers at Ready At Dawn for failing to pretty up the port in some way. While Malenfant's reasoning may appear to hide some reticence to retool, one has to consider that the game in question tanked on the platform with the largest install base. The Wii version isn't aimed at gamers who bought and enjoyed Okami -- it's aimed at the millions ofidiots people who didn't. If anything, we think Clover's masterpiece would be better served by having some of that bloat excised.

yeah I know people are going to bitch and complain, but it makes sense.
This game is for people who didn't get the game. Not for people who already played it.
Ash @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:09PM
Lets just hope they release this at a budget price like Resident Evil Wii.
LaughingTarget @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:11PM
I'd like them to re-tool the story back to the traditional Shinto stuff, not turn it into science fiction half-way through.
Phranctoast @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:14PM
this isnt bad news. the ps2 version is one of the greatest games

Now I have a pic of Captain Linebeck... best new character in the Zelda universe.
But I still have my shaggy hair... but, I want to change, and be less troll =(
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:51PM
eh, I guess the broken english proves it

Fernando, your new haircut looks fantastic, much better than the old one.
Thumbs up guy!
Blast Processing Megadrive @ Oct 24th 2007 2:08AM
I second Fernando's comment: Linebeck is one of the best Zelda characters ever.
Though, noone will ever be as cool as Error, and noone should ever try.
Mr Khan @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:15PM
well, it'll support 480p, at least, and most likely 16:9
There are a lot of reasons for them to do this, and making a profit off of Okami is probably at the top of the list, such a beautiful game had to require an investment that they probably didn't retrieve with those meagre PS2 sales
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:22PM
eh, that sucks, but i didn't expect much to begin with
Gavin @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:24PM
And this comes as a surprise to anyone?
Seriously people...these ports are lazy attempts at a quick buck.
Spartacus @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:26PM
I'm a little confused how they think porting their game from casual console to a another with less than 10% of the userbase might snag them a profit. I guess if the cost of the port is minimal than any bit can help, but maybe they should try porting it to a console that has a more "traditional" userbase (Xbox, Gamecube, 360, PS3).
Gamerextrordinaire @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:27PM
In reference to the article: Don't you mean "waggling" the finger? Eh?
JodyAnthony @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:34PM
good, its a perfect game as is.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:57PM
Ditto.
capt_carl @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:41PM
Not even 480p? Shame shame shame.
Blast Processing Megadrive @ Oct 24th 2007 2:10AM
480p/16:9 support has neither been confirmed nor denied. Try not to spread FUD until the official word has been spread.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:41PM
"[...] save for the magical brush strokes which will now correspond to motions of the Wiimote."
And then people would go on calling WiiMote a WaggleMote.
I have tried that numerous times. There is a challenge like that in Raving Rabbids. It sucks. (Or similar "seal" touch screen thing from DS' Castlevania.)
So, no thanks, the waggle would be completely out of line for an action game Okami is.
But I guess there is no turning back now...
Psaakyrn @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:58PM
Big difference between the seal thing in castlevania: the seal thing is 100% gimmic: there's absolutely no gameplay within it, while this is much less so. I'd compare it to how the bommerang is used on Zelda:PH, where it's so intrenched in gameplay that it just seems natural.
Hmm.... wonder if the pointer-control formula could be transfered to 3D (and by extension, Wii games)? SMG does it partially, but I'm refering to more complete control: buttons only determine camera controls and pointer-type. (similar to Zelda:PH, if you exclude the menu buttons around the edges of the screen)
waynski1457 @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:59PM
i would have bought this game in a heartbeat, but i never owned a ps2. i did however borrow my friend my wii so i could play it, and i will buy this when it comes out in a heartbeat. i loved every minute of the game and cannot wait to experience it all again!!!
phattie @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:59PM
Meeeeeee-ah, im happy for the 5 people who are gonna pick this up; but, its way too complicated for the wii demographic, my nephew still only plays wiisports like its the first time hes played it... 8 months after they got their wii. They have spiderman3, but, thats too complicated, so its wiisports everyday. Mom is happy cause the kids are distracted so no need to pick up anything new.
F. Rocker @ Oct 23rd 2007 8:06PM
Tell that to the over a 3.5 millions of people who has bought Twilight Princess.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 23rd 2007 8:12PM
please just go away. please. You're stupidity is making everyone here dumber.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 23rd 2007 8:13PM
see what you made me do. I typed you're instead of your. It's like phattie's idiocy spreads like a virus infecting everyone around him.

Wow... seriously for a moment fattie, don't you think this is getting just a little bit sad?
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 23rd 2007 8:43PM
yep, numbers don't lie
unless you're a sony fanbot
i_hate_mtv @ Oct 23rd 2007 9:21PM
Jesus, man. Did Reggie tie you up and orally rape you as a child or something? I'm saying this because even though you obviously lean towards Sony, you only seem to pop up on the Nintendo news threads.
Get a life.
Robobagins @ Oct 23rd 2007 8:10PM
Was Okami really all that long? Really? Even compared to Zelda games? I haven't played a Zelda since SNES days so I wouldn't know. But Okami felt entirely too short to me, even with sidequests and what not.
Have we gone from complaining about gaming experiances being too short, to too long?
Come on Ready at Dawn, you can't even tweak it so battles occur in the game world instead of that weird field?
gonk @ Oct 23rd 2007 8:41PM
well length is fine if it's all good, like ff7. but in okami there were a lot of bullshit things that made the game longer for no good reason
Gambit @ Oct 23rd 2007 8:48PM
The only things that'll probably change is the resolution and the slowdown in some cutscenes will go away.
mccomber @ Oct 23rd 2007 9:21PM
Hopefully one thing that will change is the sales numbers, this game definitely deserves to sell a hell of a lot better than it did on the ps2.
i_hate_mtv @ Oct 23rd 2007 9:24PM
Does everything have to be an argument on this site? Can't there, for once, be a polite conversation around here?
gonk @ Oct 23rd 2007 9:37PM
hell no!
jorojoserojas @ Oct 23rd 2007 10:21PM
That only happens when we all unite about something. Video games = violent teens, peripherals send the wrong message, and of course, Jack Thompson's rants.
Brandon @ Oct 23rd 2007 9:30PM
I really don't mind that much. I never owned a PS2 so I missed out on it.
Shibathedog @ Oct 23rd 2007 9:45PM
I don't think theres a problem with that at all, I'm going to pick it up just for an excuse to play through it again.
License to ill @ Oct 23rd 2007 9:52PM
Damn a straight port, pretty fucking lazy Capcom...
Now I see why wii sales are dropping in japan...
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 23rd 2007 10:24PM
ever heard of market saturation?
probably not if your with ps3
mccomber @ Oct 23rd 2007 11:09PM
So, are you saying after less than a year the Japanese market has already bought all the Wiis it needs? Or do you just not understand the definition of market saturation?
License to ill @ Oct 23rd 2007 11:45PM
How about another reason why japans wii sales are down..

Zelda-like games belong to zelda-like consoles xD
now i only need kingdom hearts 1 and 2 (ok ... and shadow of the colossus) for my "all games that i wanted to play on playstation2 but couldn't" list to be ported to wii xD
