New games this week: Call of Duty 4 edition
Shh, we're trying to enjoy this. We're trying to enjoy one last week of a clear winner in the battle for new release supremacy. Because honestly, after this week, it gets pretty murky. But we're not going to linger on that. For today, there is Call of Duty 4, which, if the recent beta was any indication, is going to be fully awesome. Heck, we'll just be happy to see people on our friends list playing things that don't end in "alo 3" or "range Box". Catch the full list for this week after the break.

should be "Super Mario Bros 3 edition"
and I just used my last 600 points last night! Gotta get me some more. I can't go without SMB3
baby sea tuna @ Nov 5th 2007 8:52AM
...yeah, if it were 1990.
JodyAnthony @ Nov 5th 2007 9:01AM
hey, SMB3 is one of the best games ever!
But anyway I will totally be picking up CoD4 for PS3 in a couple weeks. It's the first Call of Duty game I've really been excited about (not that I didn't LIKE the other ones, but this is the only one I would pay full price for)
James @ Nov 5th 2007 9:04AM
It should be Mario 3 edition, yes.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 5th 2007 9:13AM
I totally agree, it is one of the best games ever, and it's cool that it's coming to VC...but, being 17 years old, previously available on multiple platforms, and (most likely) been already beaten by 85% of the people on this site, it doesn't necessarily warrant a ZOMG!
Gangsta Smurf @ Nov 5th 2007 9:31AM
Can always just ... download it from teh intrawebz.
*runs*
James @ Nov 5th 2007 9:53AM
Same can be said for "next gen" games too huh?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Nov 5th 2007 11:06AM
are you serious. JodyAnthony is right, SMB3 is the greatest game ever!!! So suck it!!!
SMB3>>>>>>>>>>>>COD4
That's right, I just compared two games that aren't even close to being similar. Whatcha gonna do about it punks?
James @ Nov 5th 2007 11:11AM
In a few years when COD5, or 6 or whatever is out people will still be liking SMB3 more too.
Crazy how it works like that.
Shockgamer @ Nov 5th 2007 11:32AM
Played Mario 3 in 1990 on NES. Played it again in 1993 on SNES.
I'm done with Super Mario 3 and I'd rather have these new release posts be about...you know...new releases?
Better yet, give the VC its own thread so people can gush about their lost childhoods undisturbed by the silly present.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Nov 5th 2007 1:14PM
"That's right, I just compared two games that aren't even close to being similar. Whatcha gonna do about it punks?"
Vote you up +++
tfive24 @ Nov 5th 2007 8:51AM
someone help me, I want this game, but i only have enough money for 1 game this month. I want Mass Effect too. Should i get this game or wait for Mass Effect?
Fandel @ Nov 5th 2007 8:57AM
Get Mass Effect unless you really love 1st person shooters. Don't get me wrong, COD4 looks like a kick-ass 1st person shooter, but at least Mass Effect is an original game (Not a sequel; not a military shooter).
Jerk Face @ Nov 5th 2007 10:06AM
I was watching my buddy play COD4 on his PC this weekend, the demo at least, and it was pretty fucking awesome. It was loud, chaotic, gritty and one of the most realistically frightening war simulators I've ever seen.
I was really impressed, actually. I'm only marginally into FPS..es.. FPS's? FPSs? Ugh.
Anyway, I'm not FPS Fanboy 2007 or anything; but COD4 looks fucking awesome - straight out.
Now Mass Effect... *drools* I don't even know what to tell you, man. You're fucked! Start trading shit in!
NATO_Duke @ Nov 5th 2007 10:24AM
The 360 beta of COD4 was pretty fun to play, so it is worth the buy I would bet. Yet, in your situation I would wait for Mass Effect, and get a game that promises something new. How many fps games have you played already...nothing new to COD4 than some tweaks to the genre.
Mass Effect looks pretty cool, and is supposed to be a different experience - that is more worthy of money I think.
PS - to people saying, "It should have been the Super Mario Bros Edition"...grow up. Every week they name this article after the biggest release, and every week a bunch of people cry that it isn't named after the game they get off on. Big deal. Move on.
JodyAnthony @ Nov 5th 2007 10:39AM
nato, it was a joke.
NATO_Duke @ Nov 5th 2007 11:05AM
Cool. I'm used to someone pissing and moaning each week though, so I thought it was more of the same.
Fandel @ Nov 5th 2007 8:54AM
Honestly, I'm thinking about passing on Call of Duty 4 for a couple months... maybe later. After buying Bioshock, Halo, and the Orange Box in the span of two months, I'm getting sick and tired of 1st person shooters.
Call of Duty 4 is just one 1st person shooter too many for me... at least for now.
As for Super Mario Bros. 3 being the "game or the week". Sorry, but as good as SMB3 is, I already bought the game 3 times already, I'm not buying it a 4th.
copa @ Nov 5th 2007 9:46AM
Yeah, I can't freaking believe it. Any other time in the last few years this would have been a day one purchase. But now, I'll be picking this one up sometime in 2008.
I just won't have the time between Rock Band, Mass Effect, Orange Box, and Halo 3.
Jeff @ Nov 5th 2007 10:09AM
I'm in the same boat. I played it, and it was okay-- nothing thrilling. I have Crysis and UT3 later this month, so an FPS I wasn't in love with can wait.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 5th 2007 8:55AM
I guess that means I've got 1 more day to finish up Portal and the craptacular GHIII before this disc becomes permanently fused into my Xbox.
Synner @ Nov 5th 2007 9:49AM
Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks GH3 is crap. Is it the notes not matching the music or the fact that the songs are boring as hell to play that gets you? I hate the songs where it's like hold blue for 30 seconds, then green for 15, then yellow for 45.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 5th 2007 10:37AM
Mediocre song selection, sketchy control, and ugly art style. And don't even get me started on Boss Battles!
On the upside, the Les Paul is really comfortable to use. It'll be great for Rock Band!
megaStryke @ Nov 5th 2007 10:49AM
To those who feel "disappointed" with GHIII, you guys are just upset because Harmonix didn't make it. You are upset so you are more critical of it, and you therefore try to notice all the faults with it that you glossed over in Guitar Heroes I and II. Not saying that Rock Band is worse or better, but it sounds like some people are just jilted because mommy and daddy split up.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 5th 2007 11:07AM
For the record, I don't give a fuck who made GHIII, and they don't give a fuck if I care. They've already got my money anyway. It's not like I own stock in Neversoft, Harmonix, EA, or Activision. I just calls em like I sees em.
Shagittarius @ Nov 5th 2007 11:08AM
There are a lot of notational problems in GH3 and the song selection is mostly pretty bad. Needs more rock and less shlock.
Any of the gay bands from 00 onward should be removed and replaced by real rock bands. Oh well gotta appease the kiddies whos music appreciation only goes back 4 years...too bad it hurt the game overall.
Shockgamer @ Nov 5th 2007 11:25AM
How horrid an affliction, to become old and bitter towards the modern.
Here's the part where I wait for Rock Band to come out, just to hear people complain about how the guitar part is a catatonic snooze to play compared to GH 3.
Synner @ Nov 5th 2007 11:37AM
Has nothing to do with being old and bitter. There are songs where you no shit hold blue for 45 secs, then hammer down to red for another 30, who the fuck wants to press one button for a whole minute? I am sitting there looking at my watch during the shitty sonic youth song.
hegemonyhog @ Nov 5th 2007 11:47AM
I wouldn't mind GHIII so much if the timing was fixed. I went back and played GHII just to make sure - the timing's definitely changed, and it's not entirely consistent.
Also, the Slayer song is simply ridiculous. Just because you use three frets doesn't make that thing "easy".
megaStryke @ Nov 5th 2007 12:02PM
ITT, old farts complain about the dang-blasted music them kids listen to these days.
Shagittarius @ Nov 5th 2007 1:15PM
Call me crazy megastryke but I think if your on a game subtitled :Legends of Rock you should have to be a legend and Rock.
Then again thats just me, I happen to be sane.
megaStryke @ Nov 5th 2007 1:44PM
There ARE "legendary" songs and artists in the game, but apparently they aren't good enough. It's not like the games subtitle could have additional or alternative meanings like, say, YOU are working to become the next rock legend.
megaStryke @ Nov 5th 2007 1:50PM
By the way, Shagi, in regards to Rock Band, what is "legendary" about the following?
The Konks
Vagiant
Crooked X
Jet
Molly Hatchet
Nine Inch Nails
Pixies
Coheed and Cambria
Fall Out Boy
The New Pornographers
etc.
Sounds like a lot of know-nuthins to me. Of course, I'm actually willing to give all these people a fair shake, but they hardly live up to your LOFTY standards. Then again, few things can.
Daran @ Nov 5th 2007 2:47PM
MegaStryke, shut the fuck up. I negitive rep you every time you post a stupid comment, which happens to be every time you type.
gtfo my joystiq
Shagittarius @ Nov 5th 2007 2:57PM
When did they subtitle rockband? Rockband : Legends of Rock
Funny, I don't think thats what its called.
Also, I don't care about what the bonus tracks are, you can throw anyone you want to on the bonus tracks. I'd rather not see the POS bands on the main setlist though, that goes for GH AND RB.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 5th 2007 4:18PM
I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor after that comment where the Pixies (arguably the founders of "post-punk" or "alternative rock") were called a bunch of know-nuthins (I mean, this is the band Kurt Cobain noted as one of his biggest influences!) However, it's all starting to come together.
Mega, come back after you wean yourself off of the major-label teat, and we'll talk music.
megaStryke @ Nov 5th 2007 4:36PM
Shagi, only the first three artists I listed were bonus track artists. The rest are part of the main set list. Take a look. There is plenty more garbage amongst them.
baby sea tuna, since post-punk and alt rock are two genres that have given birth to many of the "MTV trash" that you and others despise, I don't think it's good to give such a band too much credit. So Kurt Cobain liked 'em. So what? I bet John Petrucci likes some crazy band and cites them as influences, bands that no one cares about. I bet The Ramones were influenced by Superbad Bubblewrap. Does that make those particular bands magical? No.
So I'm on a major label teat? Funny, I must have missed that line in the Official Good Music handbook that says the only good bands are indie/garage bands that never make a dime. Wave some cash in their face and watch 'em "sell out", I guarantee you that. Anyway, yeah.
lawlersauce @ Nov 5th 2007 5:20PM
mega,
seriously, the pixies are not a "know-nuthin" and they aren't some band that gave birth to MTV crap.
Honestly the stuff that MTV plays is actually getting better. (I actually saw Common on there.) [Common is a GREAT hip-hop artist, and has been underground for a while, don't start talking how hip-hop isn't music, because this guy is a master of it]
And NIN is a "know-nuthin" ? Maaan, just cause you have no idea who these bands are, doesn't mean you need to hate on them. It just turns out making you look like a complete idiot.
megaStryke @ Nov 5th 2007 7:11PM
I DO know who these bands are, that's the thing. I know who they are and so I feel assured in my statement that we could do without 'em. NIN can suck an egg.
Hiroken @ Nov 6th 2007 12:06PM
Ohhhhh hell no. You didn't just refer to Nine Inch Nails as a "know nuthin", notwithstanding the other fine bands in your little 'my mom won't buy me this cd' list. How does your colon look from the inside?
~
Hiroken @ Nov 6th 2007 12:09PM
Dude.
"NIN can suck an egg"?
Trent Reznor is unarguably one of the finest musicians since Page or Hendrix. Did you know he plays ALL of the instruments during his recordings? That he's a classically trained pianist?
My guess is, you've heard maybe one or two NIN songs on the radio and simply have no idea to the depth, breadth and influence NIN has had on music for nearly twenty years.
Trent Reznor IS a Legend of Rock, whether you like it or not.
~

Anonim @ Nov 5th 2007 9:08AM
COD4.
I heard that X360 version has more stable framerate once again?
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Nov 5th 2007 9:15AM
Thats right. Plus, you get rumble (right now) and achivements... all for the same price.
GamerG @ Nov 5th 2007 9:20AM
Yes, the 360 version is the best of the console versions, still PC version for me
JJ @ Nov 5th 2007 9:29AM
I actually heard, that both of them are virtually identical.
That said i'm getting CoD4 for my PS3 all things equal.
Deviation @ Nov 5th 2007 10:52AM
According to Infinity Ward, the PS3 and 360 versions are identicle. Both are at 60fps and both have FSAA. So... yeah.
Shagittarius @ Nov 5th 2007 11:13AM
Too bad the PC version is better than all the console versions fanboys...ahahahahahah!
Slaziman @ Nov 5th 2007 1:34PM
Because there is nothing more to graphics than FPS and antialiasing right? You think Infinity Ward hates money? Of course they won't say if the PS3 version is lacking.
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Nov 5th 2007 9:12AM
I guess next week will be Super Mario Galaxy edition.
