Edge: Animal Crossing Wii is a social networking MMO

Reputable European publication Edge magazine is reporting that the upcoming Animal Crossing for Nintendo Wii is indeed going the MMO route, as previously rumored by fellow Future Publishing siblings Next-Gen. "A Japanese source has confirmed to Edge that the upcoming Wii iteration of Animal Crossing is set to be a social networking MMO," reports the magazine.

No other details are known at the time, Nintendo has not provided any official confirmation. The article is found on page nine of the latest issue, which prominently features the PlayStation 3 on both the front and back covers.

YAY! I love animal crossing and this really excites me. It always seemed perfect for this type of environment and Wild World was a complete letdown for the whole 'play with friends' dealio.

what does social networing MMO even mean? ive had enough of having to hear people go on and on about myspace and facebook. I'd be happy with a plain MMO Animal Crossing, none of this social networking garbage. Although, I can't really complain yet cause:
1)it's not confirmed
2)i don't know how a social networking MMO is different from a regular MMO

You must be thinking of the methods used by PSN and XBox Live where you talk to people - not friend codes.

Good attempt at a slam, too bad you were confused as to the services. If you think the code system is sooooo social, then I suggest you branch out and try the ones that actually are social.

There is nothing intrinsically difficult about creating network games on the Wii of any type. What some people don't seem to understand is that it isn't like the Wii is just some kind of ridiculous system that has a magically different internet from other consoles... its just that Nintendo tends to be a touch too mindful of their family-friendly image. Square helped to perpetuate this notion that the Wii somehow uses the internet differently, but it really doesn't and Square was just making excuses for not wanting to port their horribly unfun failure of an MMORPG (the last thing you want to do is say "yeah, we aren't porting this because no one would buy it"... that would just make even MORE customers drop the service).

It seems to me like Animal Crossing might be the sort of title where they say "Yeah, but we are willing to take the other route as well and provide a more interactive online experience"... granted, it will probably be coupled with heaps of warning labels for parents.

Personally though, I'm more interested in whether or not there will be a monthly fee.

My bet, since you essentially need full chat for a social networking MMO, that it will simply have an easy "report user" function, and Nintendo will employ another GM Gestapo, similar to the ones that Square Enix employed to keep a stranglehold on FFXI

I'll dig up what I posted on Wii Fanboy when the rumor emerged earlier.

Here's the way I envision it, you'd have your suburb just like the GC or DS towns to play offline and there'd be a big city online, basically representing the server lobby. It'd have mostly the same things in the towns but more and bigger and with hundreds or thousands of other people around. People on your friend list can come into your town whenever the gates are open, but you can also invite new people you meet in the city to your town or vice versa.

The city could have a mall with a huge Nook's where you can get promo items and most requested furniture. An Able Sisters' with the top patterns from the community. An auction house. An arcade where you can play some classic games, maybe trial versions of games on VC. A museum where people can show off art they've created in their own museum. Special holiday events and tournaments. Lots of possiblities.
